![]() Some early metal type fonts included up to 3 different Qs: a short-tailed Q, a long-tailed Q, and a long-tailed Q-u ligature. Old-style serif fonts, such as Garamond, may contain two uppercase Qs: one with a short tail to be used in short words, and another with a long tail to be used in long words. A common method among type designers to create the shape of the Q is by simply adding a tail to the letter O. Typefaces with a disconnected Q tail, while uncommon, have existed since at least 1529. All three styles are considered equally valid, with most serif typefaces having a Q with a tail that meets the circle, while sans-serif typefaces are more equally split between those with bisecting tails and those without. In writing block letters, bisecting tails are fastest to write, as they require less precision. ![]() : 77 Uppercase "Q"ĭepending on the typeface used to typeset the letter Q, the letter's tail may either bisect its bowl as in Helvetica, meet the bowl as in Univers, or lie completely outside the bowl as in PT Sans. TypographyĪ short trilingual text showing the proper use of the long- and short-tailed Q. Later, the use of C (and its variant G) replaced most usages of K and Q: Q survived only to represent /k/ when immediately followed by a /w/ sound. Of these, Q was used before a rounded vowel (e.g. In the earliest Latin inscriptions, the letters C, K and Q were all used to represent the two sounds /k/ and /ɡ/, which were not differentiated in writing. The Etruscans used Q in conjunction with V to represent /kʷ/, and this usage was copied by the Romans with the rest of their alphabet. Therefore, qoppa was transformed into two letters: qoppa, which stood for the number 90, and phi (Φ), which stood for the aspirated sound /pʰ/ that came to be pronounced /f/ in Modern Greek. As a result of later sound shifts, these sounds in Greek changed to /p/ and /pʰ/ respectively. In an early form of Ancient Greek, qoppa (Ϙ) probably came to represent several labialized velar stops, among them /kʷ/ and /kʷʰ/. Some have even suggested that the form of the letter Q is even more ancient: it could have originated from Egyptian hieroglyphics. q/ is a sound common to Semitic languages, but not found in many European languages. The Semitic sound value of Qôp was /q/ ( voiceless uvular stop), and the form of the letter could have been based on the eye of a needle, a knot, or even a monkey with its tail hanging down. Its name in English is pronounced / ˈ k j uː/, most commonly spelled cue, but also kew, kue and que. Q, or q, is the seventeenth letter of the Latin alphabet, used in the modern English alphabet, the alphabets of other western European languages and others worldwide. Anything you’d ask a 5-weight to do on the water, our test rod did, in spades. All of this makes the R8 extremely versatile: it’s as good a nymphing rod as it is a dry-fly rod, and while you wouldn’t call our 9-foot, 5-weight test model a streamer rod (nor expect it to be one in this age of monster meat flies), it’s got more than enough backbone for Zonkers, Buggers, Muddlers, and other traditional trout streamers. It’s accurate at short and long ranges, a rare combo. It finished right near the top of our test for distance and provided wonderful feel and line control on the water. At just 2 11/16 ounces, it’s light and lively and has enough power to cut the wind. Most rods are an either/or proposition you get distance or feel, lightweight or power. And that is what sets the R8 apart: It does everything really, really well. On the lawn, there’s a tendency to favor the purest caster or the biggest bomb-thrower. But then we put the R8 Core on the water-and that decided things. At the end of the lawn-casting session, several testers were leaning in a different direction. From long bombs to roll casts to precision mending, the R8 does it all, beautifully. Why it Made the Cut: The new R8 Core packs everything you want-power, feel, accuracy, and line control-into one remarkably versatile fly rod. Two editors stood far off to the side, while the others used masking tape to cover the logos on the award-contending rods. On the final morning of the test-when a select few rods had quickly emerged as the front-runners for our Editors’ Pick and Best Value Awards-we conducted a blind-casting test. We also judged the rods on aesthetics (because we think looks matter in a fly rod) and their warranty (because every fly rod, no matter the price, is an investment). And, by the grace of the fish gods, we experienced one of those you-should’ve-been-there weekends and got to see how well these rods stood up to the weight and strength of wild Delaware River brown trout. We double-hauled, roll-cast, and chuck-and-ducked. We cast dries, nymphs, hopper-droppers, and streamers. On the water, we again judged the rods how far and accurately they cast but paid particularly close attention to versatility. Then, in the late afternoons-just in time for the evening sulfur hatch-we put on our waders and hit the river. We tested every rod for distance and accuracy, and also recorded test-panel notes on each rod’s power, feel, control, and overall castability. Each tester was given a lane with targets measured at 30, 40, 50, 60, 70, and 80 feet. In the mornings and early afternoons of our test, we took over the enormous lawn at the lodge to set up our “range” for casting drills. ![]() Similar to shooting the same load through every gun in a shotgun test, we spooled every reel with the same fly line- Rio Gold WF5F. We arrived with 16 fly rods in a wide variety of prices (sub-$200 to $1,000-plus), actions (glass noodles to graphite broomsticks), and lengths (7 ½ feet to 10 feet). ![]() Overall it is a great camera for the price. It's not as good as a GoPro Hero 4 Black, but it is 1/5th of the price and I wasn't very nervous sending it flying through the air attached to my Phantom. I did like the Xiaomi Yi camera though, but it doesn't fit in the Zenmuse gimbals designed for GoPros (GoPro is mini USB out, Yi is micro plus the Yi is a different size physically). I'm not sure if that was because I was not powering the camera and running on its own battery or if the DJI iOSD mini was stripping that information out of the transmission. The only issue I had was that the camera stats (microSD card, battery level, recording status, etc.) were not displayed on the FPV view. I was using this cable: įPV worked well (when wifi was off and after I turned it on in the app) and transmitted okay. Prior to sending it back, I connected a whole FPV setup as well. Overall, I think these are junk and sent them back. This means that you will run into the stop and the gimbal gets very jumpy if you move the dial too far in either direction, which is very easy to do and then the gimbal gets confused and takes a few minutes to recover (sometimes it doesn't recover). Finally, I had it connected to my Naza controller so I was able to tilt with the controller dial, but it does not hold position when you let go of the dial-you have to hold the dial and it allows too much travel. ![]() The gimbal also went crazy when my transmitter was off, in addition, it had a hard time holding a steady position. Despite my efforts, I was not able to upgrade the firmware. (I start flying with a full battery charge, or 4 Green bars, and land when the second bar starts flashing, or one-and-one-half Green bars.) There is occasional gimbal "wobble" in the 1080p video. The flight time is reduced from 20+ minutes in the clean configuration to just under 15 minutes. The sluggish response is more noticeable under windy conditions. The extra bulk of the gimbal/battery/camera results in a bit of sluggish response compared to the clean Phantom 2 configuration. I used rubber bands to attach the Xiaomi Yi Action Camera to the 2D gimbal. I used velcro to attach the gimbal battery to the underside of the Phantom 2 as depicted below.
